Brazilian Jujitsu, also referred to as BJJ, is attracting more and more practitioners in North America, the UK, and Australia as both a sport and a viable self-defense martial art. Its rising popularity is due to many factors, but the primary reason is because it has been used with terrific results in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions and vale tudo matches.

BJJ is unique in the martial arts realm in that it is both offensive and defensive at the same time, from the same positions. This leads many people to believe that a BJJ fighter is in danger when he might actually be on the attack.

The underlying principles of BJJ enable a small practitioner to overpower a much larger practitioner by applying leverage, and using his stronger muscles to attack his opponent's joints, neck, or weaker muscles. Early vale tudo videos (Brazilian for "anything goes") show many of these tactics in action.

BJJ fighters can also end a fight through traditional means (punches and kicks), but these attacks are often opened as a result of traditional BJJ attacks, leaving himself vulnerable in the process; or directly through the application of BJJ attack techniques. BJJ attack techniques are engineered to render an opponent unable to continue a fight, either by inflicting damage to a joint or limb, or rendering him unconscious or immobile.

Most attack techniques can be organized into three categories:

1) Joint Locks: a fighter will isolate one of his opponent's joints or limbs and use leverage to move the joint beyond its intended range of motion. Some examples are knee bars, arm bars, Kimura, Americana.

2) Chokes: the word "chokes" is sometimes mistakenly used for "strangles," but the two are represent completely different types of attack, thought they both focus on the neck. A choke occurs when a fighters attacks the windpipe of his opponent to cut off or restrict air flow.

3) Strangles: with a strangle, a fighter attempts to cut off the supply of blood to the brain by constricting the carotid arteries. Strangles are seen more often when fighters are wearing gis (rear naked choke being a large exception), which are the traditional training and sparring uniform. You can view BJJ gi videos to see what these look like.

BJJ is a fascinating martial art. It takes years or even decades to rank, but even inexperienced BJJ practitioners fare very well against expert practitioners from other arts like karate or tae kwon do. There are many vs videos available which demonstrate one art vs another. These videos will provide a glimpse into why BJJ is so effective for self defense.

'Living philosophy', is what Wing Tsun Kung-Fu, which is one of the chinese arts, used to be described as by the ancient masters. (...)

'Living philosophy', is what Wing Tsun Kung-Fu, which is one of the chinese arts, used to be described as by the ancient masters.

With reaching the highest levels of teaching in Wing Tsun, you will be taught how to understand yourself as well as how to interact with other human beings. The aim of the etiquette of Wing Tsun is to enshrine significant ideals in its followers , the basis of which is provided by the amalgamation of Taoist, Buddhist and Confucian principles. These include a true appreciation of honour, loyalty, dignity, respect for other human beings and control of ones ego, emotions and temper. Without these a person can never master himself, or the art of Wing Tsun, as these two are synonymous.

The art has been widely regarded as 'the noble Wing Tsun' due to these unique characteristics. The ultimate aim of Wing Tsun, is the development of the student. In fact, 'Si-Fu' translates as 'Father-Teacher', signifying the role of the Master as he takes on the responsibility of his 'todai' (son). This in unlike most other Martial Arts, such as Karate where 'Sensei' simply means 'Teacher'.

Physical, Spiritual and Health, Wing Tsun also has three sides to it. It’s regrettably infrequent to find schools to teach these three together. Spiritual guidance and understanding can only come from a true Master, whereas physical technique can be emulated. As he/she develops as a person, this is one of the most important teachings in Wing Tsun as well as developing students physical techniques.

To truly comprehend the Martial Art does not require you to be or become Chinese, you simply need to understand the teachings of previous and current masters of the system. Logically, however, this is only possible if you appreciate the historical and social background to it. It undermines the foundation of the Martial Arts, when parts are changed or just ignored without properly learning them.

Removing etiquette or culture leads to the exclusion of history. What are you learning, if you take away the history of the martial art? It is a just a series of moves with no principles or any understanding behind them. This differs from what is considered a true martial art.

It is not uncommon for people to want to understand all forms of Martial Arts just as some people want to understand the Solar System and how politicians think. It is necessary to gain an insight into the history, politics and political philosphy which underpin the constitution, it is an essential component without which the structure, law and policies of the state cannot be understood.",Hilaire Barnett was clear on this point in her book Constitutional and Administrative Law stating "to study the UK's constitution successfully.

There is always differing oppinions in the differences of palmheel and punching.

This will help shed some light in referense to self defense. Until I started to train in close combat situations. I didn't quite understand the differences.

Growing up in fighting fist were always use because that is what we knew. So as I grew up as I am sure most do without any guidance a fight was always fists and on every occasion I can think of either my hands or my opponents hands got messed up.

You see the beauty of the palm heel strike is that the palm of our hands are very resilient to blunt force just to see what I mean hit the closest brick wall with your fist and then with your palm. Hows that for a difference? That is one of the biggest reasons it is so effective for a smaller person to use against an attacker.

You can use the edge of hand as a chop just another opption. For pressure points use your hand and forearm with elbow for mass destruction.

As for the punch not to say it is not a effective weapon because it is. Punching to the forehead and breaking your hand just may have lost you the incounter.

In the same situation above If you would have used the palm heel strike it sould have throwen his head back and opened the throat for an edge of hand strike or elbow smash that could put an end to the situation.

So understand that if you decide to use the punch rather than a palm heel or edge of hand you run the risk of injury and the use of a hand. Will you last long if that happens? Do you really want that being the deciding factor.

The technique you use is not as important as conditioning your body. It can be as simple as hitting the punching bag in the garage or grabbing a partner and using some focus mitts.

Your best option would be to find a school with accredited instructors (Hey I happen to know a few world wide even).

Building confidence and stress reliefe plus having fun doing it will happen if you train in a reputable school. I will point you in the right direction just contact me.

The Aikido way is to align body and mind with the spirit or ki and it said that the only way to be able to do this is through cultivating a relaxed state. Many people think that all martial arts are about aggression but Akido was founded by Ueshiba who was very much a pacifist and wanted to end aggression. When you read this article you will certainly want to know more about Aikido.

Due to the dynamic nature of Aikido, most experts say that there are no definite "styles" or "techniques" in practicing the martial art.

You may have heard of the word dojo before but not known what it means. Well, it's a Japanese word for training structure used for martial arts. A truly authentic and traditional Aikido dojo is used only as a place for formal and symbolic gatherings, and is rarely used a place to actually train. When people train Akido in a traditional way, they should actually go outside.

A modern day Aikido dojo however loses most of its formality. Most of the time, there is no distinction from an Aikido dojo to the actual place of training and practice. Generally speaking, the two are considered to one and the same.

When people trained under the Great Teacher Ueshiba, the students were encouraged to spread the tenets of Aikido and create their own dojos. Aside from encouraging them to set up dojos and share the knowledge he taught, he also inspired them to develop their own styles and interpretations as long as these techniques adhere to the basic principle of aikido, "not fighting force with force."

As mentioned before, Aikido is not about aggression, instead it's more about self-defense. The purpose isn't to do with injury but more about preventing the other person from doing harm. This is perhaps why there is rarely a weapon used in the sport. The martial arts is made up mostly of movements and techniques. In saying that, there are those advanced students who move onto using certain weapons. Weapons that are used in aikido are the tanto, the wooden jo and the bokken. Aikido is an amazing martial art that everyone can benefit from.

Being in a activity where players are expected to punch each other, there is a large chance that accidents will happen. (...)

Being in a activity where players are expected to punch each other, there is a large chance that accidents will happen. That is why, boxing equipment is worn as to ensure the safety of both the sparring partner and the boxer himself.

When talking about boxing training equipment, who would overlook the importance of boxing gloves? They are utilized in order to protect the fists against injuries so a boxer will be given the probability to throw his most ferocious punches with more force than he would perform when left bare-fisted.

Moreover, headgear is a important equipment in this class of sport since as the name implies, it is used to protect the head against internal and external brain injuries.

Headgear is engaged to cover the upper fraction of the head in a way that only the mouth and the chin are seen. However, it cannot ensure full protection in terms of internal injuries though it can lessen the risk.

There is also the mouth guard which is employed in order to protect the teeth from getting knocked out. Even if not seen, this is normal equipment for any boxing event. Other boxing equipment includes swivels, speed punching bags (this is a smaller kind of punching bags that helps improve the boxer's punching speed), hand wraps, skipping ropes, and others. In order to practice punches, boxing training bags are used. This is also considered as important equipment for the sport.

Let it be noted that every piece of equipment should either help strengthen or protect the body from harm. So in buying, you have to ensure that the thing you get is sturdy enough to bear all those punches and hits. They should be comfortable too since boxing requires a lot of activities. You have to get a real good brand so it can last for an extended period of training.

Today's society would have one believe that a woman who chooses to live alone is allowing herself to become a target for all sorts of criminal activity. (...)

Today's society would have one believe that a woman who chooses to live alone is allowing herself to become a target for all sorts of criminal activity. A woman alone is an easy mark, so to speak, and as such should be prepared to defend herself. However, there is evidence that it is not the unknown attacker that should be of concern, but those that are chosen to be trusted. Should one choose to learn the women's self-defense required to defend themselves against the unknown attacker, or would that time be better spent learning how to read people and allowing those who are unstable to remain outside of our lives? This is a question that every woman, should explore prior to becoming involved in a personal relationship.

Women's self defense begins at home. Criminal statistics indicate that each day four women are murdered, not by random acts of violence, but rather homicides perpetrated by intimate partners. For this reason, women need to be skilled in the art of women's self defense. One should never be at the mercy of anyone, let alone a loved one. Although one may not want to inflict injury, a course in women's self defense can enable one to escape a perilous situation.

Some women may not feel that they are excluded access to a women's self-defense class; however this is often not true. Many communities have athletic gymnasiums which offer martial arts classes or even specific women's self defense courses. School systems also often sponsor learning seminars which will include a class in women's self defense. In addition, many local agencies sponsor these instructional classes for little or no cost. Local police departments, colleges, and even the local YMCA will often offer classes in the art of women's self defense. These courses are designed to bring in women from all spheres of society and in any age bracket. One should never concern themselves about their physical ability or handicaps as a good women's self defense class will address all needs for the fairer persuasion. Regardless of a woman's ability, there are means for an individual to protect themselves against all forms of formidable attack. One needs only investigate the community offerings and proceed to the next women's self defense class to begin work in securing their own safety, both in the home and when alone on the streets of their community.

It is important to also remember that in addition to learning to protect one's self, an individual will build confidence upon acquiring the skills of women's self defense. Some courses that are offered through martial arts agencies, the local gym, or YMCA, will also serve to help the woman to build muscle or tone up their body. The feeling that one looks better and is able to protect themselves from potential perpetrators, enables the individual to feel confident about their appearance and their ability. However, if an individual chooses a simple women's self defense course, with no additional physical training, is still going to feel more confident about their ability for personal protection. This confidence will emulate from the individual who has participated in women's self defense and perhaps keep them from every becoming a target to begin with.

In a world gone crazy there are more and more attacks are happening to women on a daily basis. Women's self defense is becoming more important to protect you from theft, rape, or even death. (...)

In a world gone crazy there are more and more attacks are happening to women on a daily basis. Women's self defense is becoming more important to protect you from theft, rape, or even death. If you are being stalked or about to be attacked there are several ways you can protect yourself from such a horrible experience. The knowledge of self perseverance with the ability to protect yourself will have you ready to walk the street in confidence. Using women's self defense the right way will save you the misery of recovery or the loss of property.

Tip number one, if you carry pepper spray; warn your attacker before you spray if you have time. If you are far enough away yell, "I have pepper spray and I am not afraid to use it." This fact alone may be enough to sway your attacker from fulfilling his predetermined plans. The eye to eye contact you have and the direct confrontation may be enough to stop the attack entirely. Attackers do not like to be looked at. That is why most assailants attack from the year.

If you do not have pepper spray or mace, confront your victim by voice. In a loud voice yell, "Stay back, go away." Even if you don not have a weapon, claim that you have a weapon. The claim that you have a weapon and the fact that you are looking at their face may be enough to stop it. If you are able to pick them out in a line up, they probably will leave you alone. Your voice is the most effective weapon. Scream and scream loud. Use a whistle or other noise maker to draw attention to yourself and your situation.

If some one grabs you and you are not that strong, you can outwit your opponent. If they grab your arm, push in the direction that they are pulling. This will cause your attacker to be off balance and you can use your weight to make him even more unbalanced. Use your legs to keep pushing until he is totally on the floor or falling backwards. Finish this famous women's self defense by either kicking the attacker in the groin or placing your heel in his face or solar plexus. Once your attacker is down, run to safety as fast as you can and scream all the way.

If you learn women's self defense the right way, you are almost certain to escape with less injury and your life. You can be taught women's self defense techniques over and over again, but if you do not practice what you have learned you will be taken by surprise should that attack ever take place. Remember use your common and be aware of your surroundings. The best women's self defense is your awareness and your alertness. You may never run into a situation where you will have to defend yourself if you pay attention. You will never have to be a victim if you practice women's self defense the right way.

Your child has been flooding with images of martial arts. (...)

Your child has been flooding with images of martial arts. From the movies they watch starring experts like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Chuck Norris, to cartoons and kids shows such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Power Ranger, kids are already interested in the martial arts.

Benefits Associated With Kids Karate

There are many forms of martial arts, especially the ones that originated in Okinawa and Japan whose first philosophy is to teach respect and “first do no harm.” Lots of parents are under the impression that kids karate is a violent sport and the very emphasis that martial arts stresses is nonviolence.

When your child watches martial arts demonstrations in the movies and on TV, they are under the impression, just as adults are that martial arts is a way to commit violence. When you enroll your child in kids karate, your child will learn that this isn’t the true meaning of Japanese martial arts. The very word karate refers to “empty hands.”

When your children are enrolled in kids karate it opens a door to teach them respect for others, and is a way for them to build confidence and self esteem which is the path they need to be on to become responsible and happy adults. Today’s society has become obsessed with the sense of self. We have lost the feeling of belonging to a community and thinking of others needs as well as our own. When your child becomes involved in kids karate, they learn to respect the wants and needs of other people which in turn makes them into well-adjusted, caring adults.

How to Find a Kids Karate Program

You should have no problem finding a variety of kids karate programs. There are many martial arts schools that specialize in teaching young children the methods and techniques of karate. You may be presented with so many choices that it becomes confusing. You want to choose the best school for your child to attend when learning kids karate and this can be more difficult.

You can begin by asking friends and neighbors for their recommendations. Once you have several suggested kids karate schools, you will need to visit them to see what types of teachers, equipment, philosophies and methods are used. Try to attend at least one kids karate class for each program you are considering. You will see what the children are learning, the overall mood and attitude to be able to make a more informed choice.

Although there are various forms of karate that you can choose from to practice, if you are interested in getting involved with one you are going to need the proper karate equipment. (...)

Although there are various forms of karate that you can choose from to practice, if you are interested in getting involved with one you are going to need the proper karate equipment. There are some pieces of karate equipment that are necessary and some which are optional, and it is important not only to determine which are which but also to determine which specific ones you are going to have to get.

Make a List

First you have to consider what specific type of karate you are going to be practicing, and then find out from here which specific pieces of karate equipment you are going to need. There are many resources that are available to help you with this. All styles require karate mats and most require belts, and then there are a variety of accessories that you can choose from as well.

Before You Buy

Before you head out, you should use your list to help you set out a sort of budget, and this way you will have at least a remote idea of what you can spend and thus will be less likely to end up going overboard and spending more than you need to. Although you can generally find karate equipment quite cheap, it is important to remember that if you start to get carried away and buy more than you need to you can end up blowing a fair bit of money.

Where to Buy

There are actually quite a few different companies that offer karate equipment, one in particular being Superfoots. They are a company that is constantly making every possible effort to provide quality sporting goods at reasonable and affordable prices, and they feature a lengthy list of categories, including: uniforms and belts, sparring and boxing gear, martial arts weapons, training gear, martial arts videos, accessories, martial arts footwear, and more.

The Martial Mart is another great option, and they are a company that makes every possible effort to provide you with high quality karate equipment and related products at reasonable and affordable prices. They offer one of the largest and most varied selections of karate equipment, including: sparring gear, uniforms, weapons, rank belts, training gear, accessories, footwear, and more.

Remember

Regardless of where you actually go for your karate equipment needs, you want to make sure that you take time to compare and contrast during your shopping experience so that you can get the best value possible.

A lot of people actually do not realize how different the two are, and although mixed martial arts are derived from the martial arts teachings, there are many extreme differences that need to be taken into consideration.

What is it?

Basically mixed martial arts is the classification given to a combat sport in which there are a variety of different fighting styles and techniques that are used, and this includes everything from punching and striking to grappling and wrestling. The mixed martial arts sport has been around for quite some time now, although its popularity has only really begun to prosper over the past few years in particular.

Because of this extreme popularity and fascination with the sport that has taken place, martial arts training in general and as well the overall combat effectiveness of it has evolved incredibly, and is practiced by literally hundreds of thousands of different people around the world.

You have probably seen mixed martial arts fighting on TV before, whereas only a few years ago the only real type of fighting aired on television was boxing. The UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championship, in particular has become notorious with this sport, and airs regular fights on TV.

They are a United States-based organization that was actually originally started as a tournament in which the sole purpose was to find the world’s best fighters. The immediate popularity that showed through here was what quickly expanded the UFC and today it is one of the most well recognized and respected MMA related organizations in the world.

There are some really incredible mixed martial arts fighters out there today, one which you have surely heard of before being Chuck Liddell. Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell is just one of the many different fighters who fight for the UFC, and he has a very extensive background in both kickboxing and collegiate wrestling.

Rich Franklin is another of the most popular mixed martial arts fighters in the world, and he too currently fights for the UFC. He is definitely one of the fan favorites and actually was one of the coaches on a season of the Ultimate Fighter Championship television series.

There are so many different styles and elements that are incorporated into and included in mixed martial arts, and it is definitely a style of fighting that takes time and practice to learn.
